Thinking Cap

After the phenomenal success of the Women's Marches, people are trying to arrange a #ScienceMarch. Here is a simple version of a sort of #pussyhat for science.

Like scientific research, the hat starts with the basics, two sticks and a ball, then grows from just three stitches to a body that you bring together at the end, with sides that fit each other perfectly.

Size: one size

Finished measurements: ~20 in. (50 cm) circumference, unstretched

Materials

  • any worsted weight yarn in either blue or green (seen all together they will be global!)
  • size 8 (5.0mm) knitting needles, or size needed to get approx. gauge
  • a darning needle

Gauge

~5st/in (20st/10cm), but knitting is stretchy, so if you get somewhere close, it should be wearable

Pattern Instructions

Crown

CO 3 sts, leaving a long tail for seaming.
Row 1: k1, kfb, k1
Row 2: p and all even crown rows
Row 3: k1, kfb twice, k1
Row 5: k1, kfb x4, k1
Row 7: k1, kfb x 8, k1
Row 9: k1, *kfb, k1* to last st, k1
Row 11: k1, *kfb, k2* to last st, k1
Row 13: k1, *kfb, k3* to last st, k1
Continue this pattern, increasing one k stitch between kfb, until you have 98 sts.
Row 27 should be: k1, *kfb, k10* to last st, k1.

Continue even in Stockinette stitch until cap measures 7 in. (18 cm) from cast on to working row, ending on a WS (even) row.

Brim

Row 1: k1, *k1, p1* to last st, k1.
Row 2: p1, *p1, k1* to last st. p1.

Repeat these two rows 5 times, or to desired length.

BO loosely in pattern.

Sew up the sides and weave in the ends. March with fellow supporters of science, facts, and evidence.
